      Car and Driver got their hands on new McLaren GT which in turn gives us some data. The GT is heavy for a McLaren at 3464 pounds but it is supposed to be a heavier and softer Grand Touring car that is more relaxing to drive.


      Yet, Car and Driver states the seats are uncomfortable. Well, that is a problem if taking the car for a long journey.

      The M840T motor from the 720S is detuned in the form of smaller turbos and a higher compression ratio. The idea is to minimize turbo lag and improve response. Yes, it's slower but not slow as the 10.7 @ 133 1/4 mile time shows.

      You also get a more relaxed suspension as the GT pulls 'only' 1.01g on the skidpad compared to the 720S 1.09g.

      So is it sports car or true Grand Tourer? Car and Driver feels it is simply a roomier McLaren and not a true GT. They may be right:

      McLaren says the GT "meets the demands of high-performance driving and comfort and refinement in equal measure." We disagree. With its tempered powertrain, expanded cargo space, and relatively decent rear visibility, the GT is as close to a daily driver as McLaren offers. But there's still a hard-core supercar hiding beneath the GT's leather-lined interior and sophisticated shape. It's still more about speed than it is about comfort or refinement.

      The McLaren GT becomes more impressive as you rack up miles, and it's moderately priced compared to many of McLaren's other models. But a true grand tourer isn't just a car you can drive across several states in a day. It's a car that makes you want to climb in it and head for the horizon. McLaren has created yet another exceptional supercar in the GT, but it's a grand tourer in name only.

        I don't know what else everyone expected. I think this thing is headed for a short life...it's the dullest, least-interesting-looking supercar that's ever been built...and it's basically a fatter, softer, heavier 570S. I really don't know who the hell they think is going to buy this thing.

        Personally I think it looks fantastic. The local dealership has one on the showroom floor and it looks stunning in metallic blue. In my mind the target customer is someone who wants to drive their McLaren on a more regular basis, considering you get the larger displacement engine for a smaller price, its likely a good tuning value as well. Realistically no one is approaching the limits of any McLaren on the street and if you are...jail time is in your future. This car is for the buyer that recognizes that fact.

        I thought this would be exactly what you describe. My dad went and drove it right when it hit the dealership. He told me it was a tight and uncomfortable pile of $#@! but he is 80 years old.

        They seem to have missed the mark on delivering a GT and just delivered a softer McLaren. I don't think it will be a hit but I do think it is a fantastic car and if it isn't a popular McLaren for picking one up on the secondary market.

        Has he tried a Bentley Conti (ie: is it a problem with slow slung coupes?). I have seen multiple reviewers say that the seats aren't that comfortable, less so than the 720S seats and even the Senna's. But a bit easier to get in and out of.

        Yeah pretty much all true GT cars are front engine. They probably should have done like Ferrari and developed a new chassis for their GT line but I get they are small and probably couldn't justify the cost.

        I am guessing this thing doesn't last long especially if this CV thing gets worse and we have a legit recession. Who is going to buy a slightly softer but still uncomfortable fake GT car that has McLaren reliability and resale value?

        It's interesting because they use the carbon monocoque II chassis out of the sport series (ie: 570s, etc.) instead of the carbon monocage out of the 720S for this one. So they've already gone through the trouble of developing two different chassis, but they're so similar...
